The College of William & Mary was founded in 1693 by royal charter from King William III and Queen Mary II. One of the oldest English-speaking institutions of higher education in the world, members of the Continental Congress, signers of the Declaration of Independence and many other high-profile citizens were educated there, earning the college the nickname of “the Alma Mater of the Nation”. Today is it recognized as one of the best institutions of higher education in the country for its Doctoral program and research activities.
